IDB Sustainable Infrastructure Framework application to Mexico Projects Hub

This case study presents how the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Framework for Sustainable Infrastructure was applied to Mexico Projects Hub. The IDB's framework provides a shared understanding of the key dimensions and attributes that define sustainable infrastructure.

Mexico Projects Hub is an initiative from the Federal Government operated by the National Bank of Public Works and Services (BANOBRAS). It seeks to link infrastructure projects in different sectors —e.g., energy, transportation, water, etc.— and different phases —e.g., pre-investment, execution, operation, etc.)— with national and foreign investors. Since sustainability considerations are increasingly important to investors and can potentially influence the financing conditions of infrastructure projects, BANOBRAS decided to integrate a sustainability classification of the projects featured on the platforms. A sustainable infrastructure methodology was developed and scaled up, taking the IDB's Sustainable Infrastructure Framework as a base.

Adapting the IDB's Framework to the Mexican context and applying it to the Mexico Projects Hub encouraged adopting good sustainability practices while providing investors with the essential sustainability information for the decision-making process.
