ASCE commissioned Sinfranova to lead the first-ever Spanish translation of one of its standards: ASCE 73-23, Standard Practice for Sustainable Infrastructure, now published as Práctica Estándar para Infraestructura Sostenible (DOI: 10.1061/9780784430002). This translation marks the beginning of a broader effort by ASCE to make its technical standards accessible to Spanish-speaking practitioners and communities worldwide.

Sinfranova's selection to lead this effort was grounded in two direct credentials: active participation in the original ASCE 73-23 writing group, and having previously led the Spanish translation of the Envision rating system. This combination of authorship and translation experience positioned the team to produce a technically accurate rendition of the standard, not merely a linguistic one.

The translation was carried out in collaboration with the ASCE 73-23 Spanish Translation Group, whose members brought subject-matter expertise across sustainable infrastructure disciplines: Jaime Santamaria, Jose Joaquin Alvarez Enciso, Robert Montgomery, and Michael R. Sanio, F.ASCE.

Bringing the Standard to the Profession

Following publication, Sinfranova's Cristina Contreras joined Michael R. Sanio, F.ASCE, on the ASCE Publications LinkedIn Live to discuss the significance of the standard and its implications for sustainable and resilient infrastructure practice across Latin America and the Spanish-speaking world.

More than 500 million people speak Spanish as a first language. Closing the language gap in technical standards is one of the most direct ways to raise the floor on infrastructure quality across the region.
